What is hypnosis?

Briefly, hypnosis is a focused state of concentration in which the critical faculty is bypassed so that the subconscious is more receptive to suggestion.   Hypnotism is the study or act of inducing hypnosis.  Hypnotherapy is a treatment program using suggestion and reeducation of thought & behavior towards the desired outcome of the client.

What does hypnosis feel like?

As a client's attention would be drawn away from the outside world, relaxation becomes more prominent. Attention is directed to the inner self whereby guided imagery, creative visualizations, symbols, metaphors, direct, and indirect suggestion are used in conjunction with the client's stated request and desire for change.  Hypnosis is usually described as an altered state of consciousness, focused attention, deep relaxation, a peaceful, calming sensation.

A therapist will ask a person about to be hypnotized to get comfortable. Often the person will lie down. The therapist may use several different techniques to put the person in hypnosis, including having the person: count backwards, watch an item sway back and forth, concentrate on the voice of the therapist, or several wonderful rapid techniques. As the person becomes more and more relaxed, he or she allows the conscious mind to stop controlling and to accept suggestion. The therapist may suggest that the person begin to relax, visualize a peaceful scene, and move away from daily troubles and pains. Once the person is fully relaxed, the therapist will make suggestions about the goals the person wants to achieve. Other modalities can be integrated into the hypnotic process, such as NLP, emotional release & removal techniques. For example, the goal may be to release painful, yet buried memories. In this case, the therapist may ask the person to remember or regress into times past to find out what was going on when the uncomfortable feelings began. This is called regression hypnotherapy or back to cause therapy. The therapist may also give posthypnotic suggestions that will help in achieving goals. For instance, a person may be asked to feel like exercising every time he or she smells fresh air. The therapist may suggest that a person minimize discomfort from a certain area of the body. (However, if medical intervention is required a twinge of discomfort will remain.) The trancelike state is very similar to daydreaming. In this situation, a person may become so lost in what he or she is doing that time is forgotten. During hypnosis, a person concentrates deeply and focuses on a particular subject, memory, sensation, or behavior that they wish to understand or change.

At the end of the session, a person is asked to regain a state of complete, yet relaxed alertness.

Who can be hypnotized?

Anyone who wants to experience hypnosis can be hypnotized. I have found that some people who have previously been told they couldn't be hypnotized weren't hypnotized simply because they were too curious about the experience to let go & experience it!  Once there initial curiousity has been satisfied, they are then ready to let go & experience deep trance.   Hypnosis may be used in many situations including: decreasing the perception of pain, such as with back pain, burns, or childbirth,  decrease stress and symptoms often associated with stress. The very first session is usually used to see how well a person can accept suggestions. The therapist and person then set goals for each session. There are several tests that are commonly used to see if a person is a good candidate for hypnosis.

Will the hypnotist "control" me?

Only if you want to be controlled!  Seriously, no one can make you do in hypnosis anything that you don't want to do.  I get so many questions about how stage hypnotists "get" their volunteers to do those "things".   Remember, that's what they wanted to do!    Get up there & have fun!   Have an excuse to let down their hair and play!  It is important to work with a trained hypnotherapist.

There are no real complications. Hypnosis does not cause anything to happen, but rather makes it easier for the person to achieve specific goals. When people are relaxed and in a trancelike state, they are more open to suggestion. They can change the way they perceive situations, pain, addiction, or understand behavior more completely. Hypnosis is a tool to help make changes.
